This is a beautiful song written by my brother Warren Jurgens.
Following is the story he tells about it. Click on the icon at the very bottom it to hear the song.
I had no idea where this theme came from. The first line of the verse and
chorus just kind of wrote itself, I just had a vague idea that the song was
a father singing to a daughter. It sat unfinished for the several months,
and then this weekend, out of the blue, I picked it up again and worked on
it some more. Again it was strange, because what I came up with didn't quite
seem to fit under the context I was looking at the song. Saturday evening, I
played The song for Steven, our neighbor, and his reaction was leave it
alone, it's finished...I wasn't really convinced....
Monday morning Judi heard the tragic news that our friend Gary Walker had
died this weekend. Gary & Becky have four daughters, and Gary loved them all
so much. It is so sad that Gary won't be around for their new grandchild, a
wedding in September, and so much more. We visited the Walker's on Tuesday
night, and when we got home I pulled out the lyrics to this song and was
amazed to see that all the lines that seemed wrong, now made sense in the
context of this situation. In a way it seems like this song wrote itself....
I can remember sitting in the front of the computer looking at the lyrics
and thinking, there's a lot of references to eyes in this song. One thing I
always remember about Gary was when you talked to him he was always so
focused on what you were saying and that really came through in his eyes.
It's funny because his eye contact never made you feel uncomfortable, it was
just really calming....
Gary was the music pastor at Olathe Bible for quite a few years, and music
was a big part of his life. For many years he did a ministry performing
music in the prisons... so in a way the music references that I also
questioned fit too.
Wednesday night my friend Danella Cash and I tried to record the song with
me doing lead vocal and her doing the backup, but it just wasn't happening.
We hung it up around 9:30 that evening and were kind of discouraged because
the visitation was the following day. At 10:30 that night Calvin Scott who
did the lead vocal showed up at my house with some friends with prayer
request for my wife Judi. Calvin is a great singer so I asked him if he'd
mind putting down a vocal for this song. I didn't really think it would be
quite right, but figured it was worth a try. Calvin learned the song and
sang both his parts you'll hear on this recording in just over an
hour....truly amazing.
We told the story of how the song had come about and played the song for the
Walker Family and friends Thursday afternoon. Words can't describe the
feeling in the room that God was moving in everyone's heart at that time. We
were all literally moved to tears. I was truly honored to play a small part
in helping Gary's daughters deal with the loss of their father.
Today we played the song at the funeral, and it was unlike anything I have
ever been a part of. This experience has been life changing, and opened my
heart to God in ways I never thought possible
Warren
